I started DJing in 1981 while in 7th grade with The Young Hot Mix Five, featuring one of the best to do it, Larry “ Hot Mix” Harris( RIP) and The one and only DJ Rek!! I joined the group because of my love for music, and I couldn’t breakdance!! When I entered high school, I kept my passion for music, especially Deep House, but didn’t have time for DJing because of athletics and school. I dibbled and dabbled here and there with my cousin DJ Rek and my buddies during the summers in Chicago at different summer block parties and events.
As a freshman at The University of Iowa, my cousin Pat M introduced me to Big Monk Leonard, the top Dj on the airwaves. Monk took a liking to my style and would allow me to do live mixes on-air, which sparked my interest in the craft again. At this time, I was still going by the name of Edward” Mixin” Mead. Fate would have its way. The summer before my sophomore year, I was introduced to Miami’s DJ Blade. He was visiting a friend who was a Dj also, and it just so happened he heard me doing a few tricks on the 1’s and 2’s and was impressed. He asked me what my name DJ Name was. I told him, and he replied, you are too cold for a name like that and named me DJ ICE. Spending the summer hanging out with him lit a fire in me, which got me back in the game. I went on to do events all over the nation while in college.
In the last decade of my life, I have helped others get ahead, especially our youth. Such endeavors as founding The Forever Ours Foundation support other non–profits with financial assistance, including school supplies, Secret Santa, and college tours and scholarships.
